Erik Sims – Owner & Chair

Erik Sims is an entrepreneur and executive leader with a proven track record in building and scaling organizations across multiple industries. As Owner and Chair of Crucial Defense Technologies and Bearface Training, he combines strategic vision with hands-on leadership to drive growth, innovation, and operational excellence.

Erik’s career includes leadership roles at G. Sims & Associates and E.C. Fence & Iron Works, Inc., where he oversaw business development, client relations, and operations, helping expand market reach and streamline production processes. His entrepreneurial spirit has led him to launch ventures focused on advanced defense manufacturing, explosives safety, and specialized training for law enforcement, military, and K9 teams.

Renowned for his collaborative leadership and results-oriented mindset, Erik continues to mentor emerging leaders and build high-performing teams. His ability to balance innovation with discipline has made him a trusted advisor in defense, manufacturing, and training communities.

Scott Newbury – Vice President

Scott Newbury serves as Vice President of Crucial Defense Technologies, bringing over two decades of experience in law enforcement and tactical operations to his leadership role. He is dedicated to advancing safety, security, and operational readiness for defense and public safety clients.

Scott’s law enforcement career spanned 23 years, including 16 years on SWAT, 13 years with the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force, and 7 years with a HIDTA investigative team. His work included pursuing high-risk fugitives and leading complex narcotics and organized crime investigations. Over his career, Scott received numerous medals, ribbons, and commendations for his service.

Drawing on this unique blend of tactical and investigative expertise, Scott helps shape Crucial Defense Technologies’ mission to equip partners with reliable tools, training, and technology for high-stakes environments. He holds an Associate of Science in Criminal Justice from Florida SouthWestern State College.

Hugh Middleton – Chief Operating Officer

Hugh Middleton brings over 30 years of combined experience in Naval Special Operations and senior civilian leadership roles. A former Navy SEAL Lieutenant Commander, Hugh served with SEAL Teams One, Three, Five, and Six, including overseas assignments and joint staff postings, and worked extensively at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

Following his military career, Hugh served as Director of International Training and Director of Maritime Operations at a billion-dollar security firm, and later managed intelligence analysts at a major defense company, focusing on IED threat characterization. He went on to co-found Kopis Mobile, where he served as CEO, leading the design and manufacturing of app-enabled equipment for the Department of Defense, law enforcement, and private security markets.

Hugh’s blend of operational expertise, executive leadership, and entrepreneurial vision continues to guide Crucial Defense Technologies’ growth and innovation.

Trevor Roberts – Director

Trevor Roberts is a Marine and Army veteran with over 30 years of combined service in defense, law enforcement, and international security. His law enforcement career included service on SWAT, in Narcotics, and as Supervisor of an Intelligence Surveillance Unit, where he led high-risk investigations and operations.

He later transitioned to the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service (DSS), serving as Agent-in-Charge of protective details and as a Unit Supervisor in Baghdad, where he managed operations, logistics, and procurement while building critical multi-agency partnerships. He also served as a Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR), overseeing compliance on security contracts.

Trevor has supported the State Department’s Anti-Terrorism Assistance (ATA) and INL programs, contributing to international security and counterterrorism. Recognized with multiple awards for his service, Trevor is valued for his leadership, operational insight, and ability to deliver results in complex environments.

Daniel M. Gottlieb – Chief Financial Officer

Daniel Gottlieb serves as Chief Financial Officer of Crucial Defense Technologies, overseeing the company’s financial strategy, operations, and growth initiatives. He brings extensive experience in investment, capital management, and strategic planning.

Before joining Crucial Defense, Daniel founded and led Tin Box Partners LLC, where he directed investment and advisory initiatives across multiple sectors. His entrepreneurial background and expertise in scaling businesses provide Crucial Defense with a strong foundation in both financial discipline and innovative growth.

Daniel is committed to ensuring long-term financial performance while supporting the company’s mission to deliver advanced solutions to defense and security clients.

Taylor Newbury – Director of ITAR Compliance

Taylor Newbury is the Director of ITAR Compliance at Crucial Defense Technologies, where he ensures adherence to the Department of State’s strict regulatory framework.

With a background in the U.S. Navy, Taylor brings military expertise and attention to detail to his compliance leadership role.

Working closely with legal experts and operational teams, Taylor helps safeguard the company’s activities while supporting national defense objectives. His unique blend of service and compliance knowledge strengthens Crucial Defense’s reputation for integrity and reliability.

Enrico “Rico” Doro – Director

Enrico “Rico” Doro is a retired law enforcement Lieutenant with more than 25 years of service at the Fort Myers Police Department. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Rico built his career in tactical leadership, serving over 21 years on SWAT and four years as a K9 narcotics handler. He also commanded units in patrol, drug investigations, and special enforcement.

Beyond active duty, Rico has trained the next generation of officers at the Southwest Florida Public Safety Academy, teaching officer safety, firearms, defensive tactics, and use-of-force courses for more than 25 years.

Recognized for his tactical expertise, instructional leadership, and community service, Rico brings integrity and operational depth to Crucial Defense Technologies.
